The DJI Phantom 4 Drone Can Basically Fly Itself

On March 1, DJI released the Phantom 4 camera drone, the successor to the widely popular Phantom 3. The Phantom 4 is a highly intelligent drone that can literally fly itself using computer-guided vision that avoids obstacles and tracks subjects.

Unlike existing guidance systems in camera drones, the Phantom 4 does not follow a predetermined path. Instead, it makes calculated decisions based on what it detects around it. The Phantom 4 has 5 cameras pointed outward: the 4K on-board camera, 2 cameras on the front of the drone, and 2 cameras on the bottom of the drone. The Phantom 4 is able to process all of these camera feeds to create a 3D model of the world around it and use it to navigate.

Flying the Phantom 4 is incredibly easy since all the pilot has to do is tap on their phone screen. While in the air, the Obstacle Sensing System keeps the drone from crashing into any obstacles, and the Smart Return Home System allows you to call your drone back to your location when you’re done shooting.

Another innovative feature is the ActiveTrack feature, which allows the Phantom 4 to track a subject without any special accessory like a wristband on the subject.

The Phantom 4 features a battery placed in a new location that optimizes the drone’s center of gravity, and the Phantom 4 is 5 timers better at staying motionless in the air compared to previous models.

You can now purchase the DJI Phantom 4 for $1,399 from the DJI store.
