The Summit Photography Workshops and Misadventures Magazine are excited to announce the 2018 Adventure Photography Contest! Open to all female photographers, the winner of this contest will receive a free tuition to the 2018 Summit Adventure Photography Workshop in Jackson Hole, Wyoming and a subscription to Misadventures Magazine. Other prizes include backpacks from ThinkTank Photo and external hard drives from G Technology!

The Summit Workshops are the longest running and most highly acclaimed photography education program in the United States. They currently offer one of the only adventure photography workshops in the country and are proud to train and foster new generations of adventure photographers. Sponsored by Nikon, the Summit Adventure Workshop brings together 30 – 40 students every year to learn from world renowned photographers and magazine editors from National Geographic, Nikon, The North Face, Red Bull, Patagonia, and more. It is a truly remarkable experience and has been a key component to the launching of several professional photographer’s careers.

Adventure Photography Workshop will run September 8-13, 2018

Contest begins May 14th and ends June 5th at 11:59 EST. Judging will take place following closing and winners will be contacted via email and announced on Summit and Misadventures web and social media.

Entered images should fall within the theme of ‘adventure’ and can include outdoors, sports, lifestyle and/or adventure travel.

Sadie Quarrier has been a Senior Photo Editor at National Geographic magazine for 16 years and on staff for 24. She is responsible for planning, producing, and editing 20 stories a year on all media platforms including print, digital and social. Sadie leads the adventure and exploration beat and works with the photographers and filmmakers on a diverse range of other topics including environment, conservation, wildlife, and indigenous cultures. In 2016 she was awarded 2nd prize for Visual Editor of the Year by Pictures of the Year International, and she has won numerous other magazine and book editing awards.


Ami Vitale

Photographer, National Geographic

Nikon Ambassador and National Geographic magazine photographer Ami Vitale has traveled to more than 90 countries, bearing witness not only to violence and conflict, but also to surreal beauty and the enduring power of the human spirit. Her photographs have been commissioned by nearly every international publication and exhibited around the world in museums and galleries.

Zoe is a founder and a senior editor Misadventures Magazine. She founded Misadventures to help bring quality outdoor and adventure content about women to an often overlooked audience. Misadventures has since developed a dedicated readership, won awards, and has set the bar for what a 21st-century magazine for women can and should be.


The 2018 Women’s Adventure Photography Contest begins May 14th 2018 and closes June 5th, 2018 at 11:59PM EST. By submitting an entry, each contestant agrees to the rules of the contest and states that they are at 18 years old.


This contest is open to any female photographer 18 years old or older. The Summit Workshops and Misadventures Magazine will determine the winners’ eligibility in their sole discretion.


This is an adventure photography contest and entries should fall within the realm of outdoor adventure, sports, lifestyle and/or adventure travel. Entries are limited to 3 photographs per individual with a maximum file size of 4MB per entry. All files should be labeled as FIRSTNAME.LASTNAME.INSTAGRAM-1.jpg (only include Instagram handle if applicable)

We collect information from you in various ways when you use our Sites and Applications. We may collect personal information you directly provide on our Sites. In addition, we may collect personal information from you as a user of our Applications. Information we may collect includes name and email address, and phone number.
Personal information including name and email address will be shared to The Summit Workshops, Misadventures Magazine, and contest sponsors listed on the sponsor banner.


We use your personal information to provide you with services, to operate and improve our Sites and Applications, to send you messages, and for other purposes described in this Policy or disclosed to you on our Sites or in connection with our services. For example, we may use the information we collect from you on our Sites and Applications:
to personalize and improve your experience on our Sites and with our Applications;

-Original photographer retains all rights to submitted images.
-Only three photographs, per photographer, may be entered into the contest.
-This contest is only open to female photographers and all photographs must be taken by the submitting photographer.
-Duplicate submissions by an entrant will result in deletion of an entry.
-All photographs must have been taken within the last five years (2013 – present).
All entrants hold the Sponsors (the “Indemnified Parties”) harmless from and against all claims of any nature arising in connection with entrant’s participation in the contest and acceptance or use of a prize. The Indemnified Parties are not liable for any costs, damages, injuries, or other claims incurred as a result of entrants’ participation in the contest or winner’s acceptance and usage of a prize.  The Indemnified Parties are not responsible for incomplete or misdirected entries, technical or network malfunctions or failures, or causes beyond their control. Entrants are solely responsible for their entries. Entrants may not submit materials that introduce any software viruses, worms or other programs designed to damage software, hardware or telecommunications equipment or are off-topic, partisan-political, contain advertising, nudity, personal attacks or expletives, or is otherwise abusive, threatening, unlawful, harassing, discriminatory, libelous, obscene, false, sexually explicit, or that infringes on the rights of any third party.
The contest is void where prohibited or restricted by law. The Summit Workshops and Misadventures magazine reserve the right to cancel the contest or modify these rules at its discretion. In the event of a dispute regarding the winners, The Summit Workshops and Misadventures magazine reserve the right to award or not award the prizes in its sole discretion. The Summit Workshops and Misadventures magazine reserve the right to disqualify any entrant whose entry or conduct appears in any way to: inhibit the enjoyment of others; tamper with the competition; violate these rules or other applicable law or regulation; infringe on the rights of third parties; or act in an unsportsmanlike or disruptive manner. Decisions of The Summit Workshops and Misadventures magazine are final and binding.


A preliminary round of judging will be completed by Summit Workshops and Misadventures staff after which the final 50 images will be submitted to the final round of judging where the grand prize and finalists will be chosen by contest judges Ami Vitale, Sadie Quarrier, and Zoe Balconis. Judging will take place immediately after the contest closes on June 15th and winners will be notified shortly after and announced on social media.
GRAND PRIZE:The photographer with the winning photograph will win a one year subscription to Misadventures Magazine and a free tuition to the 2018 Summit Sports Workshop in Jackson Hole, WY on September 8-13, 2018. Workshop tuition does not have a cash value and is not transferrable to anyone. Attendee is responsible for travel, lodging and other expenses at the Adventure Workshop. If winner cannot attend the 2018 workshop, the opportunity and winning title may be passed on to another finalist who can attend.
Two finalists (a second and third prize winner) will be chosen in addition to the Grand Prize.
