The Bobby Model Scholarship is granted by
the Model family to a University of Wyoming student for the
Fall Summit workshop. Bobby Model came to the first Summit
Workshop as a student from the University of Wyoming where
he combined his photography with climbing -- and soon became
a world class freestyle climber. At the workshop, he met
Chris Johns, then a National Geographic photographer, who
asked Bobby to accompany him as an assistant on stories in
Africa. Bobby's photography progressed to the point he was
doing National Geographic assignments, did an internship
with Rich Clarkson and Associates, managed major Himalayan
climbs -- and returned to the Summit on the faculty. He brought
not only many talents but a great personality and commitment
to excellence.
In 2007, while on assignment
in South Africa, he was seriously injured when a large stone
was thrown through the windshield of his car. Two years of
major brain operations and slow recuperation was progressing
and he was returned to his Cody, Wy. homein early 2009.
American Photo magazine did a major story on his career and
pictures in the July issue. Then in September of 2009,as
he was slowly getting better, a sudden and unexpected cardiac
arrest ended it all. At the memorial service in Cody a month
later, more than 1,000 friends were in attendance. |
